History
PA
P.E.T.S. was founded in 1984 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania by Jo
Wright, Barb Crawford, and other interested individuals. By forming
a nonprofit organization, they realized that they could reduce the number of
unwanted animals in the region by assisting those that could not
afford to spay or neuter their pets. In 1989, a second branch was
created to serve Northumberland, Snyder, and Union counties. The
first branch continues to serve Columbia and
Montour counties and raises funds through their thrift store in
Bloomsburg.
Mission
In
accordance with our by-laws, our main mission is to
help finance spaying and neutering operations for dogs and cats of
low income individuals and families;
thereby reducing the number of animals which are homeless, unwanted,
or destroyed. Our
secondary mission is to promote
responsible pet care through such means as flyers, speakers, films,
pamphlets, articles, clinics, events, and fundraisers.
Budget
Our
budget is entirely funded by donations, memberships, and
fundraisers. None of our volunteers, officers, or board members
receive any type of financial payment from the organization. All of
our funds go directly towards our primary and secondary missions. In
the past five years, our annual budget has grown to over $50,000 with an
average of 900-1,000 animals being spayed or neutered each year. In
2007, between our two branches, we helped to spay or neuter over
1,457 animals. Since our inception in
1989, we have spayed or neutered 11,928 animals.
